  1. Fascinating. I have now enlarged my Irish knowledge. Daniel O'Connell statue. The angel with the dog is interesting. I wonder what his meaning is here. Don't like snakes.(shiver) Thanks for sharing.

  3. The dog statue is very emotional. There must be a greater story here. Do you know it?

  4. Hi Hummer, Jo, and Heather, Thank you for your comments. Just a little info about the angels and the dog. There are four at the base of the statue. Each one is said to represent an individual province in Ireland; the provinces being Munster, Leinster, Ulster, and Connaught. The dog is an Irish Wolfhound, a breed of dog which has existed in Ireland since at least the 4th century. There is a record from 391 A.D. which makes reference to the dog breed. Irish Wolfhounds often appear in nationalist images. According to the Irish Wolfhound Society of Ireland the breed is priced for its noble bearing, intelligence and keen ability to recognize the difference between good and evil. Cheers! Jennifer
